Alright, so I’ve been messing around with watches lately, and I gotta tell you about this one time I tried to get that classic Omega Speedmaster look without, you know, spending all my money. I ain’t no watch expert, but I know a cool watch when I see one, and that Speedmaster, or “Speedy” as some folks call it, is just iconic.

First off, I started looking into what makes a Speedmaster a Speedmaster. It’s got this whole “Moonwatch” thing going on, and from what I gather, the classic ones have a manual-wind movement, a Hesalite crystal, and a black dial. They haven’t changed much over the years, which is kinda neat.

Then I realized, “Hey, these things are expensive!” I saw that even used ones, like a Speedy (Speedmaster reference 311.30. 42.30. 01.005 Hesalite), have gone up in price by like 10% in just 18 months. That’s crazy. I read somewhere that they might even raise the prices again in 2024, so I figured it was now or never to find a good copy.

I started checking out different versions. There’s this smaller one called the “Speedmaster Reduced,” which is 39mm instead of the usual 42mm. It’s a bit more, uh, manageable on the wrist, I guess.

But I wanted to go even cheaper, so I started looking at alternatives. One watch, the Deepgrey from some company called Swatch, looked pretty similar and didn’t cost as much. It’s got that same chronograph look, but it uses a quartz movement, whatever that means.

I also stumbled upon something called the Bulova Lunar Pilot. Apparently, it’s got some kind of history with the Speedmaster, so that’s cool.

  • Looked at original Omega Speedmaster features.
  • Noticed the high prices and expected price increases.
  • Checked out the Speedmaster Reduced.
  • Started exploring alternatives like the Swatch Deepgrey and Bulova Lunar Pilot.
  • Found a watch called Gigandet Volante Chronograph, which I could change the strap.

There’s also a watch from a brand called Gigandet, the Volante Chronograph, that you can slap a black NATO strap on, and bam, it looks pretty darn close to a Speedy. I just searched “NATO strap” in Amazon and bought the cheapest one.

I learned that there are a few reasons why someone might want a Speedmaster alternative – the cost, the size, or maybe they just want something a little different. I ended up finding a bunch of watches that kinda look like the Speedmaster but don’t cost as much.

My conclusion

In the end, I managed to get that Speedmaster look without breaking the bank. I swapped out the original strap for a simple black NATO strap on the Gigandet Volante Chronograph, and honestly, it looked pretty slick. It was a fun little project, and now I’ve got a watch that I think looks pretty good, even if it’s not the real deal.
